“Bariatric surgery is more effective in achieving weight loss in adults with obesity than non-surgical weight loss interventions.”
Bariatric surgery should be:
- Included as part of an overall clinical pathway for adult weight management
- Delivered by a multidisciplinary team (including surgeons, dietitians, nurses, psychologists and physicians)
- Planned with continuing follow-up
NHMRC Guidelines recommend bariatric surgery for people with:
BMI above 30 plus | • Poorly controlled Diabetes, plus • An increased cardiovascular risk |
BMI above 35 plus | • Type 2 Diabetes • Heart Disease • High Blood Pressure • Heartburn • Asthma • High Colesterol • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome • Stress Urinary Incontinence • Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease • Degenerative Joint Disease • Urinary Incontinence • Fatty Liver Disease • Gout |
